The Grand Union flag, of Continental Colors, is generally considered to be the first flag of the United States. This flag was first flown by John Paul Jones from his ship in Philadelphia; it also believed to have been the official flag flown by Washington's army outside Boston, and the flag under which the Declaration of Independence was first read to the Continental Army.
